A 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in Cebu at 1:06 a.m. on Monday, October 13, twelve days after a magnitude 6.9 quake that resulted in 75 fatalities.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, downgraded from an initial magnitude 6.0, struck Cebu with its epicenter 11 kilometers south and 21 degrees west of Bogo City, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The pre-dawn quake was felt at Intensity 5 in Tabuelan, Bogo, Tabogon, San Remigio, Medellin, and Daanbantayan in Cebu, and in Villaba, Leyte; at Intensity 4 in the cities of Cebu, Danao, Argao, and Talisay, and the town of Asturias, all in Cebu; in the towns of Isabel, Hilongos, and Abuyog, and in Ormoc City in Leyte province; and in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; at Intensity III in Argao, San Francisco, and San Fernando, Cebu; in the Bohol towns of Dauis and Panglao; and in Canlaon and Himamaylan in Negros Occidental; and at Intensity I in Legazpi City, Albay.
In an interview with Unang Hirit, Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said that the magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Cebu on October 13 was an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo on September 30.
“It is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 event na nangyari noong September 30. Ang ini-expect kasi natin na aftershock from the magnitude 6.9 event is maximum would be around 5.9. So, ito 5.8. So this is not surprising,” said Bacolcol.
Residents were advised to remain alert and adhere to safety reminders issued by the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO), while the Bogo City government announced that emergency hotlines would remain open for immediate assistance.
